Setting Up, God is Cajun, Pig and Pickles

I spent a few hours out at the Lafayette Farmers and Artisans Market at the Horse Farm today, which had extended hours until 2 PM and also included what will become a monthly tradition of a food pavilion filled with local food trucks and other food vendors. The photo above is one of those food trucks setting up to start to serve the early lunch/late breakfast crowd. I made a point to bring out my camera today and relax and take in the scenes. What a great tradition for Saturday mornings.

Breakfast for me consisted of a homemade biscuit with egg, cheese sausage (rumored to be venison but fantastic either way) from MadLuAnn's. Lunch was a rib eye burger topped with local favorite Jack Miller's BBQ sauce. Tough to resist the burger after spending a couple hours smelling the magic off of a grill that had this hat perched on the back.

That's right, it says "God is Cajun." Classic. One of my new weekly favorites is stopping by Bread and Circus's table and seeing what type of salty pig parts and pickled goodness they have conjured up each week. Check out the spread below. That's some homemade tasso, pastrami, bacon and a few different pickled creations that are now all crowding out other things from my fridge.

In addition to the photos found in this post, I took a number of other ones that I am pretty excited about. The slide show is below (full screen it by clicking the expand icon in the lower right of the show) and you can also view the full set by clicking this link in order to get to my Flickr page. Enjoy!

Homemade Modified Cucumbers

It's been a long long while since I gave an update on the elusive perfect pickle search...so far only found from Steck's in NJ. Where have I turned to in order to satisfy this craving? Homemade pickles. The photo above is my first batch. These were made with Bobby Flay's recipe found here. I don't have the right equipment to made the kind that take 4-6 weeks to achieve pickle-ness, so these are the quick overnight kind. And actually they are pretty good! They have a long way to go to reach Steck quality though. The hunt continues.

Kirby Cukes

Found photo from our trip to Ottawa, Ontario this past July: Kirby Cukes probably make some damn fine modified cucumbers.

Jersey Signs: Steck's Delicatessan

We stopped by Steck's Delicatessen today to get one of the best pickles known to man...

Unfortunately, they were closed for the holiday. Funny thing was that as my mom was driving through town on the third, she picked up all of the sides for the family bbq at Steck's. Unfortunately, no pickles...but beggars from Louisiana can't be choosers. Their potato salad is pretty damn awesome as well.

Are you a Pickle or a Penguin?

So I have evidently made my love and hate fetishes with Pickles and Penguins clear. Evidently clear enough to cause some of you to email me random pickle and penguin links. Here are two for the rest to enjoy:

The Perfect Pickle?

It was different than Steck's in NJ...and I think that Steck's is still the winner.

The Modified Cucumber

“I don't want a pickle, just want to ride on my motorsickle.” - Arlo Guthrie

The current food I would like to be a connoisseur of is the pickle. I really enjoy a good pickle. When I was visiting my childhood home earlier this year, I had a one from a local deli named Steck's Delicatessen in Bridgewater, NJ and my love of the modified cucumber was reborn. I haven't found a good local deli in Lafayette for pickles so I am exploring the supermarket selection. Right now I am on the Vlasic Original Dill and it is just not doing the trick. What's worse is that I now have a big jar I won't finish for a long time.

If you are like me, go to I Love Pickles and waste your time. You can buy a pickle putter and be the envy of the green, or purchase a "I Love Pickles" wristband reminiscent of the Live Strong wristband.

As you are eating a nice crisp sour pickle, listening to The Motorcycle Song by Arlo (that link takes you to lyrics and commentary, this link gets you to a place where you can download the tune itself), go and do some research on time management related to pickle eating. Then get back to work already.
