Is it...

...cheesy to bring home unused hotel shampoo or soap to put in your guest bathroom in case anyone who stays with you needs it?

No especially if it's really good stuff. Like some hotels carry BLISS that stuff is so expensive at Sephora if I can get it for free I don't even think I'd share with my guests.

Borderline. Can you not afford to buy some good shampoo and conditioner to stock?

Definitely not a question of affording it. What I like is the single serving container. A large shampoo and conditioner bottle, if you buy it, open it for one guest, it is sure to sit in your guest bath for months...if not longer until the next one comes. So doesn't it progress past its shelf life, get gunky or maybe you just put that bottle of stuff you didn't like in that guest bath after you tried it once or twice?

I like the use once, chuck the remaining tablespoon size container and then break out the next single serving the next time I have a guest.

BTW, if I am a guest in your house, I'll use anything. I just think that the single serving is the way to go...except when my wife calls me cheesy.

nope....i have done it for years and never had a guest bathroom.
heck...i never had my own bathroom until dec. 09.

i agree...some hotels do stock some nice stuff.....as long as you are not unscrewing the pictures off the wall or taking the desk lamp...you are golden !!!!!

That made me laugh. Love it.

No, not cheesy at all. My best friend, world traveler and international diplomat, has a pretty little basket in her guest bathroom filled with little sample bottles of toiletries so that her guests have a selection to chose from. Some (many?) of these samples are the same that you're talking about. She is a top-notch hostess, and would never resort to cheesy when it comes to providing comfort for her guests. (Yes, she generally stays in somewhat posh hotels.)

Have to disagree with the wife on this one!

"world traveler and international diplomat"

Sounds like a superhero. And if it's good enough for a superhero...

If you only leave one little sample bottle, then it might create a sense of stinginess that you don't intend. As if to say, "Welcome! Enjoy your stay, but don't use up too much of our shampoo, though. Okay?"

This reminds me, I have to get a "hostess basket" together for my own guest bathroom.

I think the hostess basket may be just the compromise I need for this. Maybe I will hit up Bed Bath and Beyond this weekend!

I think the Whiskey hits the nail on the head with this comment: "If you only leave one little sample bottle, then it might create a sense of stinginess that you don't intend. As if to say, 'Welcome! Enjoy your stay, but don't use up too much of our shampoo, though. Okay?'"

I will fully support the tasteful hostess basket complete with samples from hotels (and possibly other sussies) from which our guests can choose.

Can an authentic Cajun verify my spelling of sussy?
