Say Less Than Nothing

"When you win, say nothing. When you lose, say less." - Paul Brown

A 4-1 shellacking. The US team was skinned alive in the second half. To be more specific, it all happened in about 8 minutes or so. Look at the picture above. See how Ballack is heading the ball at our net and you see no US players around him? That's not a good sign. You don't leave one of the most potent strikers in the world unmarked in your 18. If you do...bad things happen.

Here are two quotes that sum up the performance of the US team this afternoon against Germany:

  • Kasey Keller: "What this game proves is who can play at this level and who can't."
  • Bruce Arena: "I don't think too many players played themselves on our World Cup roster tonight, to be honest with you"
To be fair, and you will see the caveat everywhere, we had maybe 3-4 players from our true starting lineup on the field this afternoon.

If you want a good laugh, this live blog from the game has a ton of wit (highly recommended for the soccer fans in the audience).

The Unknown: I believe that Germany was only missing one starter. The Bundesliga released all of their national team players. One reporter described it as: MLS vs. the Bundesliga.

Arena took the blame today. Read this.

...and yes, humility could be a good thing. I agree.

I have never bought into the "good loss" theory. A loss is a loss. Or to put in an another way, if you lose you lose. You are the loser. Yes, we can learn from our losses, like how to hate losing all that much more than we already do. Winning breeds more winning more than any "humility gained" or "monkey off our back" benefit does. IMHO.

You might want to try coaching U-15 boys soccer. After my guys lose, they play better. After they win, they don't think they need to show up for the next game.

I am with you in the end though. I'll take winning over losing any day of the week.

It seems that cool hand was present the day you taught a group of small children a cool soccer move. Perhaps you can share that story with him...
