Courtesy of kottke, it appears that some undergraduate students at Clemson have tested the stated theory in a classic Seinfeld episode: if you double dip your chip, it's like putting your whole mouth right in the dip. Click here to find out if that's a true statement. If you don't really care and just want to revisit the Seinfeld episode, here's the scene at the funeral reception where Timmy confronts George Costanza.
I am sensitive to this fear so I usually break my chips in two and then dip the two halves separately. Some people turn their chip around before re-dipping...not sure that either of these options are any better since your hands are all over the chip when you adopt these approaches.
